2021 UEFA Under-21 qualifying seeding (25 november 2018)

The qualifying campaign for the U-21 EURO 2019 in Italy/San Marino has finished and the draw for the final tournament has been made last Friday.

Next in December/January the draw of the qualification for the U-21 EURO 2021 will take place. The host for this tournament will be announced at the UEFA Executive Committee meeting in Dublin on December 2nd/3rd.

This draw will be seeded based on the U-21 NT coefficient ranking.

2021 UEFA Under-21 qualifying seeding

Since I've been asked about it:

Only two play-offs are to be played in November 2018 to complete the 12-team field for the U-21 EURO 2019. Those play-offs are held between Greece and Austria and between Poland and Portugal.

These four play-off matches will count for the coefficient ranking used to seed the U-21's for the draw of the qualification for the U-21 EURO 2021 next December/January. I couldn't find an announcement of the appointed host for this tournament yet.

UEFA Under-21 Championship finals to remain in odd years

UEFA officials can't quite make up their minds about the Under-21 championship.

Initially played in even years, the finals were moved to odd years starting from 2007, "to allow it to step out of the shadow of the UEFA European Football Championship and the FIFA World Cup."

In 2012, they announced it will be switched to even years after 2015 in order "to align the qualifying phase of the competition with that of the national A teams".

However, last month, UEFA approved the member associations' request to maintain the finals in odd years.

2015 UEFA Under-21 play-off seeding (20 September 2013)

Next update: October 2013.

The coefficients for the 2015 UEFA European Under-21 Championship playoff draw will take into account results from:

2011 UEFA European Under-21 Championship (qualifiers and final tournament) - 20% of total weighting
2013 UEFA European Under-21 Championship (qualifiers and final tournament) - 40% of total weighting
2015 UEFA European Under-21 Championship (qualifiers) - 40% of total weighting

2015 UEFA European Under-21 Championship qualifying seeding (21 September 2012)

Next update: 19 October 2012.

As soon as the 2013 play-offs conclude we'll have the final coefficients for the 2015 qualifying round draw. The 2013 qualifying round draw took place on 3 February 2011, so I think the draw for the 2015 preliminaries will take place in late January / early February 2013.

Going by the 2013 procedure, there will be 4 pots of 10 teams and one of 12 teams.

2016 UEFA European Under-21 Championship - possible format

Yes, 2016, not 2015. The 2015 edition will be hosted by the Czech Republic (more on this in my next post).

The 2015 edition will be the last U21 tournament before the competition reverts to even numbered years the following summer.

UEFA moved the tournament to odd years starting from 2007 "to allow it to step out of the shadow of the UEFA European Football Championship and the FIFA World Cup.". It seems being in the shadow is just fine :)

2013 UEFA Under-21 final draw seeding (21 September 2012)

The final draw will take place on 28 November.

These are the play-off matches to be played on 12 and 16 October.

Spain (holders) v Denmark
Italy v Sweden
Czech Republic v Russia
Slovakia v Netherlands
Germany v Switzerland
England v Serbia
France v Norway

The coefficients for the 2013 UEFA European Under-21 Championship playoff draw will take into account results from:

2009 UEFA European Under-21 Championship (qualifiers and final tournament) - 20% of total weighting
2011 UEFA European Under-21 Championship (qualifiers and final tournament) - 40% of total weighting
2013 UEFA European Under-21 Championship (qualifiers) - 40% of total weighting

2013 UEFA Under-21 play-off seeding

The coefficients for the 2013 UEFA European Under-21 Championship playoff draw will take into account results from:

2009 UEFA European Under-21 Championship (qualifiers and final tournament) - 20% of total weighting
2011 UEFA European Under-21 Championship (qualifiers and final tournament) - 40% of total weighting
2013 UEFA European Under-21 Championship (qualifiers) - 40% of total weighting

More info about the Under-21 coefficient on UEFA.com (PDF file).

As mentioned before, I think there's a mistake in the regulations regarding the qualification points for teams that have hosted one of the last two final tournaments.

For Sweden (hosts of the 2009 final tournament) I used the 2011 qualification results (as in the regulations), while for Denmark (hosts of the 2011 final tournament) I used the 2009 qualification results, since I couldn't use the 2011 qualification results as in the regulation.

For the play-off draw, the seven group winners with the best coefficients will be seeded. Israel as hosts are already qualified. Their coefficient is 30302, good enough for 6th in the ranking.

Current standings available on UEFA.com.
